For a number of years, he has been a member of Campbeltown Brass and has also served as Bandmaster
of Campbeltown Junior Brass. He is a member of the
National Youth Brass Band of Scotland and thoroughly
enjoyed a tour of Japan with the band in 2008.
Since 2003, Mark has enjoyed presenting the “Brass
Band Show,” a weekly programme on local radio
station Argyll FM.
Towards the end of his secondary school education,
Mark studied at the RSAMD Junior Academy for two
years under Alastair Sinclair (RSNO) and is now in
his second year of studying at the RSAMD on the BMus
(Hons) course under Chris Stearn (Scottish Opera)
(and is enjoying not having the weekly trip to and
from Glasgow!) Mark is also receiving conducting
lessons from Nigel Boddice MBE.
Mark is delighted to be the conductor of the Newland
Concert Brass Junior Band
Mark is originally from Campbeltown, and began
playing the trombone aged eight, eventually making
the switch to bass trombone. He received his first
few years of instruction from Gordon Evans MBE.
Whilst at school, he was also a member of the West
of Scotland Schools Symphony Orchestra and the
Argyll and Bute Schools Concert Band. In 2004, he
was the Campbeltown Rotary Club's "Most
Promising Young Musician of the Year", being awarded
the Norman Milne Memorial Trophy. Mark has enjoyed
competing at solo, ensemble and banding level and
this culminated in 2007, becoming the Scottish Youth
Solo Champion.
